Luis Oliván - Huesca, Madrid & Zaragoza

After spending the entirety of his adult life working as a winemaker at many famous wineries throughout Spain, Luis Oliván decided that it was time to expand his horizons and venture out on his own. Thus in 2018, Luis Oliván Vinos y Viñedos was born.

Luis’ love for his country’s winemaking potential is what fuels him. Whereas most wineries focus on a particular appellation, Oliván seeks to find unique vineyards from various areas in Spain and showcase their terroirs. In many ways, it can be said that Luis is a “terroir hunter”. He is always scouting the Spanish countryside for abandoned vineyards with old vines. Although not certified, his winemaking is carried out to European organic standards with no use of fertilizers or pesticides in his vineyards. His minimalist philosophy also carries through into the cellar.

His Grenaches are without a doubt some of the finest expressions Spain has to offer. His Clarete is a window into the past. Whereas most would be quick to classify it as a Rosé, this style of winemaking owes itself to the century old tradition of interplanting red and white grape varieties in the vineyards so as to obtain a more balanced wine. We needn’t forget to mention his Malvar which is a limited-production skin-contact white from a grape that is so often overlooked.

Just like the country and its people, Oliván’s wines are so warm and full of life. Oliván is part of a new wave of winemakers in Spain that are redefining the country’s wine scene and changing its image around the world. We are thrilled to serve as his exclusive importers in Quebec.
