lorenzo mattoni - umbria

One man, one vineyard, one grape, one wine. That’s what Lorenzo Mattoni’s Sagrantino project is all about. Lorenzo’s Sagrantino may be scarce in quantity but abundant in quality.

Although one of the youngest and newest entrants into the winemaking scene in Umbria, Lorenzo Mattoni is no stranger to Montefalco. His family, owners of the historical Terre de Trinci estate, was responsible for pushing the ministry of agriculture to create the Sagrantino di Montefalco D.O.C. in 1979 and later propelled it to the highest certificate of origin, D.O.C.G., in 1992. It was Lodovico Mattoni, Lorenzo’s grandfather, who first vinified Sagrantino grapes into a dry red wine. Up until then, the varietal had only been used to create a Passito, a sweet red wine made by drying the grapes for several months to concentrate the sugars.

His family was a pioneer in giving the Sagrantino grape the exposure and notoriety it deserved. However, Lorenzo’s mission to study the Sagrantino grape, and more specifically, to produce it on what he believes to be one of the best single-vineyard sites suited for it, has elevated this family tradition to new heights. The vineyard where Lorenzo grows his grapes is only 1.8 hectares in size and is located near the city of Bevagna, in the heart of Sagrantino di Montefalco area of production.

His annual production being a mere 750 cases and with Canadian allocations being so limited, Lorenzo Mattoni’s Sagrantino is definitely a wine worth seeking out . We are so proud to be the exclusive importers of this rising Umbrian star.
