LA FORTUNA - MONTALCINO

Since the 1990s, Brunello di Montalcino has become Italy’s most iconic wine and a symbol of Italian prestige around the world.

La Fortuna is one of the oldest and most historic estates in Montalcino. In fact, it was one of the first five founding wineries of the Consorzio del Vino di Brunello di Montalcino – the consortium which acts as a governing body to its member wineries and helps promote the wines of Montalcino around the globe.

Founded in 1907, the estate remains entirely family-run and operated. Today, the estate has 25 hectares of vineyards and produces roughly 7000 cases of wine each vintage.

In the 1970s, Gioberto Zannoni adopted modern winemaking techniques when he transitioned from using chestnut barrels to a mix of large Slavonian oak barrels and small French oak barrels to age his wines. Moreover, La Fortuna was among one of the first wineries in Montalcino to begin fermenting its grapes in stainless steel tanks in the 1980s.

In 1997, Gioberto Zannoni’s son Angelo took over the family estate and helped bring it to new heights. Year after year the wines of La Fortuna receive great acclaim from critics around the world. Staying true to his humble roots, Angelo serves as La Fortuna’s winemaker, export manager and head of public relations.

One of the most compelling characteristics of La Fortuna’s Brunellos is that they are so approachable in their youth, a rarity for this type of wine. Don’t be fooled however, these La Fortuna’s Brunellos are meant for the long haul. Those patient enough to cellar them for a decade or two will be greatly rewarded.

Ask Angelo what to pair his Brunello with and he’ll tell you “una bella Bistecca alla Fiorentina” i.e. a grilled T-bone. But in the words of Angelo, “if not’s 4 fingers thick, it’s not a steak, it’s carpaccio”.

It brings us great pride to serve as La Fortuna’s exclusive importers in the province of Quebec.
